Naperville is a city that is split between DuPage and Will counties in Illinois. The city of Naperville was voted the second-best place to live in the United States by Money magazine in 2006. According to the 2010 census data, the city had a total population of over 140K – being the fifth-largest city in the state. Naperville has evolved into a very affluent city with many corporate headquarters springing up. In a 2010 study conducted for the village of Naperville – the town was named as the wealthiest city in the Midwest and eleventh in the nation with a population well over 140K. The town was originated by Joseph Naper in 1831 when he decided to move to the area with his friends and family. By 1832 over 100 settlers had made their way to this new emerging town. During that time Fort Payne was constructed to protect the citizens from the Indian attack that never occurred. in 1857 Naper’s Settlement was officially incorporated as the Village of Naperville with a population of over 2K. During the 1960′s with the house market boom – the Naperville village spiked in population and continued to do so for the next 3 decades. During that time the Ronald Reagan Memorial tollway and Interstate 355 was built. One of the most interesting facts is that during the 1970′s a decision was made in Naperville – to keep all downtown parking free in order to compete with other malls and this decision remains in affect to this day.
The 175th anniversary was celebrated in 2006 with a balloon parade and many concerts. According to the 2010 census data – the racial makeup of the city was 82.00% White, 2.54% African American and 12.65% Asian with 70% were married couples living together. The median income for a household in Naperville was roughly over $100K and the median income for a family was $130K. Naperville is situated inside the Illinois Technology and Research Corridor. Some of the biggest employee contributors during 1980s and 1990s boom were: Kraft, Bell Labs and Western Electric, Nicor, and Edward Hospital. In 2006 OfficeMax decided to move their corporate headquarters there as well. Fermilab Science Lab and Argonne National Laboratory are also located near the village of Naperville. From 1999 through 2010 – The Naperville Public Library has been ranked number one in the US each year with over 1.5 million visitors!
